Failing To Buckle Up Is Deadly

Everyone has heard the public awareness campaign that says, “Seat belts save lives.” Even though this though we’ve all been taught this idea since childhood, and the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) estimates that more than 15,000 lives are saved each year, people still forget to wear a seatbelt. For those who forget and end up in an accident, the result can be deadly.

According to an article which appeared on the Chron.com website, just such a situation is being blamed for a teenage girl losing her life in a rollover accident that happened near Spring, Texas. The girl was killed when she was thrown from the SUV that she was riding in on Saturday night.

Harris County Sheriff’s office reports that at approximately 9:10 p.m. four teens had been riding in a Mercedes Benz SUV along the 22300 block of Rothwood at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV veered off of the east side of the road and into a ditch.

The SUV became airborne after it struck a driveway that cut through the ditch. Once the vehicle landed it overturned. One teen, who had not been wearing a seatbelt was thrown out of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three other teens in the vehicle were rushed to an area hospital. All are listed in serious but stable condition.

Authorities say that the crash is still currently under investigation by the Vehicular Crimes Division of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

High speeds and the high center of gravity in a sport utility vehicle can make them particularly susceptible to rollover crashes. Of course, any vehicle can roll over if the situation is right. A rollover crash can be especially terrifying because once a rollover begins; there is nothing that a driver can do to regain control. Drivers can do much to prevent the potential of a roller crash by:

  • Maintaining a proper and safe speed.
  • Making sure not to overload the vehicle.
  • Keeping tire pressure at the proper psi as recommended in their owner’s manual.
  • Knowing their vehicle and practicing defensive driving.
  • Wearing seatbelts and restraints at all times.

Of course, even the safest drivers are not immune to getting into a tragic accident.
