Explosion at a Chemical Plant

StoryAccording to Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputies, on Thursday, May 2nd, at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the polyethylene unit at the Formosa Plastics plant a fire and explosion broke out.  The plant accident and fire was small enough that the uninjured workers in the plant, local businesses and residential areas were not evacuated. The fire was extinguished fairly quickly, so it did not spread to other areas at the plant site.

Injured workers were taken to various hospitals in the area, with one being airlifted to Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston, others being sent to Brooke Army Medical Center and Citizens Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca.

New Jersey-based Formosa’s facilities have been involved in industrial accidents or cited for safety violations by federal authorities and were investigated in 2006 and again in 2009. Because of the findings of inspectors, the company was required to spend over $10 million dollars to address issues at its plants in both Texas and Louisiana.
