High Speeds and Alcohol Don’t Mix
The decision to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol and getting into an accident can have devastating effects. After an alcohol-related accident that ends in serious injury or worse can leave families struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives. Over the weekend one man was killed in an accident that involved both high speeds and alcohol in Harris County.
According to an article that appeared at the Chron.com website, authorities indicate that the accident occurred just after midnight on Sunday when two cars were traveling at a high rate of speed on Airline. The driver of one of the vehicles, a Nissan Altima, lost control of his vehicle, sending it skidding sideways into oncoming traffic. It crashed into a pickup truck that was waiting at a stop sign at a nearby intersection onto Airway.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s office, the passenger that had been riding in the Nissan Altima was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver was airlifted to Memorial Hermann in serious condition. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department later identified the driver as being Jose Moreno-Herrera.
The passenger that was killed in the crash has been identified as Alejandro Chavez.
Both the driver, Jose Gamino, and the passenger of the pickup truck, Angelina Martinez, were both rushed to the hospital. They are currently listed in stable condition with only minor injuries.
Deputies report that when they arrived on the scene, Moreno-Herrera smelled strongly of alcohol. Law enforcement investigators found an empty bottle of Corona on the driver’s seat. Officials have indicated that Moreno-Herrera could be facing charges of intoxicated manslaughter depending on the test results of his level of blood alcohol.
When a person is convicted of DUI in the state of Texas that involves serious injury or death, they could be facing penalties including jail or prison time, high fines, loss of insurance and possibly the permanent loss of their driving privileges.
