Harris County Sheriff’s deputy, 47-year old Sgt. Dwayne Polk, a 16-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department was killed in a crash while he was still in uniform On Sunday, May 12 at approximately 3:10 a.m.. Polk, who was just coming from an off-duty job, was driving west on Little York when his tan Chevy Silverado that he was driving was struck and killed by a drunk driver. The accident happened as Polk was crossing the intersection of Little York and North Shepherd. Polk’s Chevy truck was struck on the driver’s side by a white GMC truck travelling at a high rate of speed. The GMC had run a red light when he hit Deputy Polk’s vehicle. Houston Police officials have stated that because there were no skid marks at the scene of the accident, it is likely that the driver of the GMC had not attempted to stop. Deputy Polk was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver, 23-year-old Anders Munos-Munos, an illegal immigrant, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital. After a mandatory blood draw was done, he was charged with intoxicated manslaughter. Munos-Munos received minor injuries from the accident. A Harris County judge ordered the suspect to be held without bond. This is the second drunk driving charge that Munos-Munos has received along with charges of the unlawful carrying of a weapon. A spokesperson for at office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement could not be reached to clarify the man’s current legal status. Polk was contracted as a deputy in a neighborhood in northwest Harris County lamented when Polk, was rotated to a new assignment after six years of serving in their community. Polk grew up in the Houston area along with his two brothers, and three sisters. He is preceded in death by a younger brother.
