Teen Involved in Hit and Run Accident After School Brawl

When parents send their child to school, it seems unthinkable that they would get into an accident between home and arriving at their destination, or on their way home from school.

That’s exactly what happened for the parents of a teen girl who is now in Memorial Hermann Hospital recovering after being involved in a hit-and-run accident in south Houston on Friday afternoon.

DeBreanna Hunter, 14, has now undergone numerous surgeries and is recovering after the ordeal.

According to her mother, Arelia Hunter, the incident was captured on video footage and it happened near Cullen Middle School, in front of Yellowstone Park.

The footage was obtained from a cell phone and it shows dozens of people fighting in the middle of the street. Teenage girls are shown slapping, punching and pulling each other’s hair.

Aurelia Hunter had been walking home from school with her younger sister, DeAsia, and friends on their way to pick up their brother from school when the fight started. In the midst of young girls, a silver car is seen plowing through a gate; the driver does a U-turn, busting through the gates and on to the track.

Younger sister DeAsia manages to jump out of the way, but DeBreanna is struck by the vehicle.

“She was jumped by seven little girls and she still walked away from that,” said Aurelia.

It quickly became a brawl before things took a turn. DeBreanna’s little sister DeAsia said she jumped out of the way as a silver car plowed through a gate and on to the track.

DeBreanna was left with a crushed pelvis, cracked ribs, broken legs and hips and liver damage. DeBreanna’s family is hoping that police will catch the person responsible. In the meantime, they have set up a GoFundMe account in order to try to defray the costs and take some pressure off the family.

The Houston Police Department’s investigators have identified the vehicle as a 2012 Dodge Avenger with a female driver in her 20’s. The driver is currently facing aggravated assault charges and the incident is still currently under investigation

It’s not a question of whether or not this hit-and-run driver will be caught, but when. It’s a cowardly act to run over someone with a motor vehicle and then leave that person injured without stopping. Whether it was simply fear that caused the person to run, when the law catches up to them, the charges will be far more serious than if they had stayed.

When the person who is injured is your own child, it is undoubtedly s one of the most painful things that anyone will ever face. Getting answers may take time and leave families wondering where to turn for help. That is the time when you need an experienced attorney.
