No parent sends their child to school thinking, imagining that their child may get hurt in an accident. For the parents of one little boy in Iowa, however, their worst nightmare came true.
The Houston Chronicle reports that a 7-year-old boy in Iowa has died after being struck by a vehicle in a school parking lot on Monday.
According to a joint statement issued by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Monday, November 17th, in the parking lot of Woodward-Granger High School in Dallas County, Iowa.
Investigators with the Iowa State Patrol say that the child traveled in front of the vehicle and was hit on the right passenger side before he was run over. A call placed to 911 at the scene indicated that the child had suffered severe injuries. Deputies with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and first responders from Dallas County EMS responded to the call. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child’s name and that of the 47-year-old driver behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck the child had not been released at the time of the report.
A letter from the Woodward-Granger Schools Superintendant, Matt Adams, was sent out to parents in the district. Superintendent Adams confirmed that the child was a second-grade student and that a grief response team would be made available to both students and faculty throughout the remainder of the week.
The crash is currently being investigated by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, while the Iowa State Patrol will assist with the technical investigation.
