What should have been a routine traffic stop Monday evening turned into a chase with police that ended with a car crashing into a home. The incident happened in the 5200 block of Kingsbury in southeast Houston when Harris County Precinct 6 deputies stopped a car in a traffic stop. The driver took off and the police pursued the vehicle. The car came to a stop only after having crashed into a nearby home’s master bedroom. Three of the people who were inside the vehicle jumped out of the car and took off running after the crash, leaving one female passenger behind.  Law enforcement officers caught up with the suspect vehicle and arrested the remaining passenger. Gerald Mitchell, the homeowner, had been feeding his dogs behind the home when the car crashed into his bedroom. “That’s where me and my wife sleep at,” Mitchell said. “Luckily I didn’t go to bed around that time.” Neighbors and friends helped Mitchell to board up his home and to clean up after the crash. Harris County deputies are still searching for the men who were in the car and who fled the scene. Statistics bear out that most accidents happen in the home. However, rarely does anyone imagine that someone might crash into their home with a car. Thankfully, no one in the home was hurt. However, if this accident had involved any kind of serious injury, the charge of fleeing the scene of an accident, it could have had some very serious consequences once those responsible are caught. They still will face serious charges for having evaded police and for fleeing the scene of a crash. If a driver leaves the scene of an accident, in the state of Texas, and especially if the accident ends involves any sort of serious injury, property damage or death, it is considered a third degree felony. If convicted, this charge cam be punishable up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000 plus damages, or all of the above.
