Houston Car Accident News

Pedestrian Meets SUV and Loses

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies report that a man was struck and killed by an SUV on FM-1960 just before midnight. According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred near Theiss Road in northern Harris County. Eyewitness reports state that the man, who was wearing dark clothing, walked out in front of a small red SUV before the woman driving the vehicle could see him and stop. The driver stopped at the scene to render aid and to wait for authorities, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim has not yet been released and no charges are expected to be filed in the case. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, a pedestrian is either injured or killed every seven minutes.

Accidents involving pedestrians and motor vehicles claim the lives of over 5,000 people per year in the United States, while an additional 100,000 pedestrians are injured in automobile and pedestrian accidents. Pedestrians and drivers should also know that distracted walking is becoming as much of a problem as distracted driving. As is the case with drivers, pedestrians can also be distracted by their smartphones, MP3 players, PDA’s or even books. 58% of pedestrian accidents occur when they are trying to cross the street, and the pedestrian was at fault for 43% of these reported incidents. Of course, pedestrians need to obey traffic laws just as surely as drivers do. However, drivers of motor vehicles must be vigilant to look for pedestrians. Pedestrians should make use of sidewalks and crosswalks as whenever they are available. In those areas where there is no sidewalk available, or there is a shoulder, always walk facing traffic.

When a pedestrian faces oncoming traffic, it is easier for both the pedestrian to see the oncoming traffic and for drivers to see the pedestrian and allows for more of a reaction time for both. When walking after sundown, wearing white or light colors is sometimes just not enough.  If you’re walking outside at night, make sure that drivers can see you. A more effective way to make sure that you are seen is to wear reflective clothing, shoes or lights. These lights and reflective strips more easily gain the attention of drivers and let them know that you are there. Avoid wearing dark colors, especially black.

Two Pedestrian Accidents In Harris County

On the last day of August, two Harris County pedestrians were struck in two separate accidents.

According to an article which appeared on the Chron.com website, the accidents both happened on Friday, August 31st.

Authorities say that the first crash happened at approximately 12:15 a.m. where a woman was struck by a pickup truck while she was attempting to cross a feeder road on Sam Houston Parkway near Greenspoint Drive. A spokesperson from the Houston Police Department said that the woman who had been driving the pickup truck may have run a red light. The driver was taken into police custody after officers at the scene determined that she had been intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Approximately 15 minutes later, a second pedestrian-involved crash occurred on Veterans Memorial Drive and Blackpool. Authorities say that a male pedestrian had been standing in the roadway of Veterans Memorial when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle. Police are treating the incident as a hit and run since the driver did not stop at the scene of the crash.

Both pedestrians were taken to area hospitals in Harris County for treatment of injuries resulting from the crashes. Both the man and woman are listed in critical condition. The identities of both victims in the crashes have been withheld by the authorities.

Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Houston Fire Department Vehicle

Vehicular accidents can happen anytime and anywhere – even when you’re not in a vehicle.  A Houston-area man was recently struck by a vehicle and killed while sitting by the roadside. A non-emergency Houston Fire Department car lost control after a minor accident and ran off the road onto a curb, killing the one man and injuring another. The Fire Department vehicle, a red Ford Crown Victoria, swerved to avoid a white Buick Le Sabre that pulled into its lane after being parked by the curb.

The Ford crossed into oncoming traffic and onto the curb where three men were sitting, killing one and injuring another. The third man was able to avoid the oncoming car. The Fire Department employee was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the driver of the Buick will be cited for failing to change lanes safely. No criminal charges have been announced at this time. If you or a loved one have been injured or killed in an accident, getting the benefit of legal counsel is always in your best interest.

Accidents can have long-term legal, financial and health consequences, many of which are unforeseen at the time. Wrongful death cases have the added burden of grief on top of financial and legal ramifications. Dealing with insurance adjustors, agents, the police, and the other people involved in the accident can make you feel completely overwhelmed.

Pedestrian on Freeway Leads to Fatal Accident

A pedestrian wandering into the southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway was the cause of an early morning fiery crash Wednesday. The unidentified woman was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident after having set off a chain reaction involving at least two other vehicles.

Houston TranStar reports say the accident happened near the exit for Dixie Farm Road just after 6 a.m.

A spokesman for the Houston Police Department said when the car struck the woman it swerved and hit a dump truck. The driver of a nearby SUV also swerved and overcorrected, causing his vehicle to roll several times into an area that was under construction. A Good Samaritan rushed to the rescue the person in the car that that was by now on fire, while the Houston Fire Department was called to extinguish the fire.

At least two people in the vehicles involved in the crash were sent to a nearby hospital to be treated and are listed in stable condition. The name of the deceased female pedestrian has not been released because she was not carrying any ID. The Medical Examiner’s office is still investigating at this time.

There was no indication as to why the woman might have been walking on the freeway.

Southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway were all but shut down for nearly three hours and reopened at approximately 9 a.m.

While the vast majority of those travelling on Texas freeways will get to their destinations without incident, accidents can happen. With so many vehicles driving at high rates of speed, the unexpected can happen and an accident is bound to happen. Because of the rate of speed and the size of many vehicles on a freeway or high speed roadway, accidents can be very dangerous to those involved in them.

It is extremely dangerous for pedestrians to walk on freeways, even in the case of emergencies. It is also illegal in the state of Texas for pedestrians, bicyclists and even horses to be on those types of roadways. Unfortunately, however, pedestrian accidents can cause catastrophic injuries and even death.
