Drunk Driver Crashes into K9 Unit

A Houston Police K-9 Unit was struck during a traffic stop on the North Freeway in the early morning hours, Monday, May 6, 2013. Two drivers were detained in connection with the accident. The accident occurred in the northbound lane of the North Freeway near Aldine bender road.

The patrol car had stopped the driver of a pickup truck which had failed to yield to a stop sign at an intersection nearby. Approximately three minutes later, the k-9 unit patrol car was rear ended by a car entering the freeway entrance ramp at a high rate of speed. The second driver, after striking the patrol car, pushing it into the pickup truck and was flipped onto its side. Both the human and K-9 officers were in the patrol car at the time of the collision, but neither one was injured. The driver of the second vehicle and the pickup truck also escaped injury as well. Both the driver of the pickup truck and the driver of the second vehicle are detained as possible DUI charges may be pending for one or both drivers.

Drunk Driver Nearly Runs Over Cop

An officer with the Houston Police Department narrowly escaped being run over by a drunk driver during a routine traffic stop. According to spokesperson with the Houston Police Department, the accident happened at approximately 3:45 p.m.

One of their officers had pulled over a vehicle onto the shoulder of the Katy Freeway near Antoine to issue a speeding ticket, when pulled another driver came along and struck the rear end of his police cruiser. The force of the impact pushed the police cruiser into the car that was pulled onto the shoulder, causing the officer to jump out of the way, unharmed. According to the Houston Police department, no injuries were reported. The driver who struck the police car was arrested and faces DWI charges.

Former Houston Police Officer Laid to Rest

Former Houston Police Officer, Dana Tweedie, was laid to rest Friday at St. Luke’s Methodist Church. Friends and family gathered to honor him one final time after his sudden death last Saturday. Dana Tweedie was killed and his wife suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident. Callie Inman, who is 18 years old, has been charged with intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle. She has posted a $150,000 bond earlier this week and is currently out on bail.

Houston Police Officer Killed by Vehicle

Harris County Sheriff’s deputy, 47-year old Sgt. Dwayne Polk, a 16-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department was killed in a crash while he was still in uniform On Sunday, May 12 at approximately 3:10 a.m.. Polk, who was just coming from an off-duty job, was driving west on Little York when his tan Chevy Silverado that he was driving was struck and killed by a drunk driver. The accident happened as Polk was crossing the intersection of Little York and North Shepherd. Polk’s Chevy truck was struck on the driver’s side by a white GMC truck travelling at a high rate of speed.

The GMC had run a red light when he hit Deputy Polk’s vehicle. Houston Police officials have stated that because there were no skid marks at the scene of the accident, it is likely that the driver of the GMC had not attempted to stop. Deputy Polk was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver, 23-year-old Anders Munos-Munos, an illegal immigrant, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital. After a mandatory blood draw was done, he was charged with intoxicated manslaughter. Munos-Munos received minor injuries from the accident.

A Harris County judge ordered the suspect to be held without bond. This is the second drunk driving charge that Munos-Munos has received along with charges of the unlawful carrying of a weapon. A spokesperson for at office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement could not be reached to clarify the man’s current legal status. Polk was contracted as a deputy in a neighborhood in northwest Harris County lamented when Polk, was rotated to a new assignment after six years of serving in their community.

Polk grew up in the Houston area along with his two brothers, and three sisters. He is preceded in death by a younger brother. Pedestrian Fatality may have involved DUI

A pedestrian has been killed while crossing the street early Sunday morning by a driver allegedly driving under the influence.

According to Houston police investigators, the accident happened at approximately 2:40 a.m. when the pedestrian had been walking in the southbound lanes of Hillcroft near Windswept when they were struck and killed by the driver of a white Acura RSX. The victim, a Hispanic man, died at the scene. His name has not been released by authorities pending notification of his family. 

The driver of the Acura attempted to flee the scene of the fatal accident and then crashed into the rear of another vehicle at 4908 Hillcroft. The second accident was located near Westpark, about three blocks south of where the pedestrian was hit.

Police say that the driver of the Acura driver was detained at the second scene and held on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Into Police Car

A possible drunk driver has been arrested after his vehicle struck and injured a Houston police officer and the driver he had pulled over on the shoulder of North Freeway early Monday morning. The man who was driving the Tahoe was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The officer and the other driver were transported to an area hospital to be treated for possible injuries. The police investigation of the crash closed down all outbound lanes of the North freeway for approximately 2 hours. All too often, stopped police and other vehicles are struck by other drivers because of a failure by other drivers to move over. In the U.S. since 1999 more than 150 law enforcement officers have been killed and hundreds more injured after being struck by vehicles along U.S. highways, freeways and roads.

Wrecker Crews Catch DUI Suspect

It was through the efforts of wrecker drivers that a potentially dangerous wrong way accident involving a DUI driver was avoided early Monday. Wrecker crews assisted the Houston Police Department in catching a suspected DUI driver that was driving the wrong way on 610 near Ella at approximately 4:00 a.m. The driver of the Cadillac almost hit the police officer. Wrecker drivers who had been listening to the exchange on their scanners decided to lend a hand. The drivers of the tow trucks eventually caught up to the suspect near the Loop located near Highway 45. According to the tow truck drivers, the wrong way driver turned his vehicle around and began going the right way.

The wrecker drivers caught up to the DUI suspect and followed him from that point. When officers caught up to the driver, they found two small dogs in the car. The driver was taken into police custody. The driver is currently facing DWI charges. The dogs that were in the car at the time of the incident have been turned over to Animal Control. As in this case, most wrong way incidents are about five times more likely to have happened between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. Drivers, particularly if they are elderly or in an unfamiliar place, may get confused and disoriented.
