Disabled Victim Shares His Story And Tragedy Now 37 Years After The Accident

The effects of a DUI accident can last for the rest of your life. A 37-year survivor of DUI shared his story on Houston Today as a warning for other drunk drivers.

The subject of the story just turned 21 in 1983 and drank heavily just before Christmas with his friends. He got into a car with a designated driver, but at some point during the drive he passed out and another drunk in the car got behind the wheel. Five minutes later, that driver ran into a pole at highway speeds.

The crash broke two of the victim’s cervical vertebrae and he was told he would never walk again. Since then, he has become a disability advocate in Campbell River. He also talks about the dangers of drinking and driving, using his story as an object lesson about it.

If you are going to drink this holiday season, please do not drink and drive. Make sure that your designated driver is responsible enough to resist peer pressure from others in the car. It is also an excellent idea to give your designated driver the directions back to your house before you start drinking. That would have helped prevent the tragedy in this case.

We urge you to be safe this season. Don’t let a DUI accident put a final bit of tragedy into this hard year.
