Driver Caught In High Speed Chase Involving His Children

Attempting to evade police is never a good idea – even if you know there could be serious consequences are involved.  Leading police on a high-speed chase while children are in a vehicle is an even worse idea.

According to a story which appeared on the Houston Chronicle website and also by the Beaumont Enterprise, that is exactly what happened last Monday on New Year’s Eve when a Brenham man attempted to elude police and ended up on a three-vehicle crash.

The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office said in a statement that Deputies attempted to pull over Corey Thomas, 31, at approximately 3:45 p.m. within the 1500 block of West Sam Houston Parkway.

Thomas, who had a number of outstanding arrest warrants, attempted to outrun police rather than being pulled over.  He drove through a parking lot and blew through two red lights on Hammerly Boulevard. The pursuit ended when Thomas crashed his vehicle into an SUV and a pickup truck.

After the crash, Thomas attempted to flee on foot, leaving behind his three-year-old daughter in his crashed vehicle. Harris County Sheriff’s Deputies managed to apprehend Thomas a short time later.

The little girl was transported to Texas Children’s Hospital to be treated for minor injuries and was later released to the custody of her mother.

No other injuries were reported in connection to the accident.

In addition to his outstanding warrants, Thomas has also been charged with felony evading and child endangerment.
