Dump Truck Leaps Over Median, Kills One

An accident at Webb Chapel Road off of I-635 early Tuesday that involved a dump truck and two other vehicles has left one person dead and others injured. The dump truck jumped over a median leaving two cars trapped under both the front of the truck and sack sides. The dump truck was sitting on top of the barrier between the eastbound and westbound lanes. The accident caused one fatality. Spokesman for Dallas Fire-Rescue, Jason Evans did confirm one fatality directly related to the crash and said that one other person who was extricated from their vehicle was transported to an area hospital; however they did not have life-threatening injuries from the accident. The Plano Hazardous Materials team was called to the scene of the accident to clean up spilled diesel fuel from the accident. Both sides of I-635 were shut down as a result of the crash. Every year, there are approximately 6,000 truck accidents in the State of Texas that result in injury or death. Many of those accidents are caused by either driver error or inexperience. Truck drivers are sometimes required by their companies that may cause them to enter into dangerous situations. These situations can involve sleep deprivation, or to abuse substances in an effort to stay awake and aware on the road. Taking such unnecessary risks on the road can be dangerous not only to the truck driver, but to others that they have to share the road with. These risks can lead to impairment of judgment or reaction times and can cause accidents. Eighteen-wheel trucks have an obvious advantage over other motorists in terms of size and sometimes in terms of power. A fully loaded truck can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, or roughly some 40 tons! Hazardous materials such as propane, petrol and other potential dangerous substances are often transported by these large trucks as well as the vast amounts of fuel that they must have on board to make their long distance runs. All of these factors increase potential dangers for other drivers who may be sharing the road with a big rig.  Even with experienced truck drivers, accidents can happen.
