Hit and Run Ends in Child Fatality

No parent should ever have to know what it feels like to lose a child.  Most parents take it for granted that when they go out to play, they will come home safe and sound. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for a Houston five-year-old when he was killed and a three-year-old who was seriously injured in a hit and run accident in northwest Harris County on Thursday evening.

Sgt. S. Wolverton of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the fatal accident happened at approximately 8:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of Fallbrook Drive near West Butte Canyon.

The two boys, identified as Jayden Aguilar, 5, and his relative, Jeremiah Aguilar, 3, were playing with a ball inside the fence at Doss Park.   While the boys were playing with the ball, it went over the fence.  The two boys pushed open a loose bottom portion of the chain-link fence and ventured out into the street in order to retrieve the ball.

While the two were in the street, the driver of a pickup truck that has been described as being either red or orange in color and possibly a Chevrolet Avalanche struck both boys and fled the scene of the accident.

Sgt. Wolverton said that 5-year-old Jayden died at the scene, while 3-year-old Jeremiah was rushed by ambulance to Texas Children’s Hospital.  Details of Jerimiah’s injuries have not been released, but he is currently listed in serious condition.

No description of the driver was available; however, pieces of the vehicle were obtained from the scene. It is hoped that the serial numbers will lead investigators to the make and model of the truck and in turn lead them to the hit-and-run driver in the incident.

Maybe it was a simple lack of awareness from either impaired or distracted driving that the driver in this incident didn’t see the boys in the street or even notice when he hit them. Or perhaps it was just a cold callousness and uncaring that caused a driver to leave the scene of an accident.  No doubt investigators will do all that they can In order to find the driver and ensure that they are held accountable for their actions.
