Hotel Fire Injures at least One

A hotel that was under construction on Hempstead Highway at FM-1960, was destroyed in a fire that injured at least one of the firefighters called to the scene. At approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters arrived at a Harris County construction site in Cy-Fair where Comfort Inn Suites was being built to find that fire had destroyed large portions of the four-story building, causing it to collapse. The blaze was contained after several hours and Cy-Fair Firefighters meticulously inspected the rubble o make certain there were no more hot spots that may cause the blaze to reignite. A Harris County Fire Department Spokesman said that while there were no serious injuries that were reported in connection with the blaze, one firefighter was reported as having been sent to the hospital to get checked out for a burn to his neck. Eyewitnesses report that the fire cold be seen from miles away. Nearby trees and a dumpster were also ignited, mirrors on vehicles in the Best Western parking lot were melted from the intensity of the blaze. Guests at the neighboring Best Western motel were told by police that they would have to evacuate. There was no construction going on at the time of the fire. However, the cause remains under investigation by the fire marshal’s office. Arson has not been ruled out. The firefighters of Cy-Fair undoubtedly consider themselves lucky that none of their own or anyone else was seriously injured or worse. Fires don’t just happen. There are three essential elements are required for a fire to start and to burn. You have to have a point of ignition, fuel and oxygen. In the case of most fires, negligence can be found occurring before a fire erupts. Damaged electrical wiring, poorly installed appliances, cigarettes improperly extinguished, exposed chemicals and even arson can contribute to a fire breaking out in the first place.
