Officer Charged with Failing to Stop and Render Aid

A former Precinct 6 Deputy Constable is currently facing felony charges for failing to stop and render aid in a crash that happened in January. Deputy Curley Johnson was in pursuit of a suspect when he cut in front of the vehicle of Jaclynn Martinez, forcing her car into an 18-wheeler while she was waiting to turn at the light located at the intersection of Woodridge Drive and Telephone Road. There were numerous eyewitnesses to the incident. According to public record, there are currently more than 500 Harris County Sheriff’s department “at fault” incidents. According to one news organization who investigated the matter, not a single ticket has been issued in those cases. Jaclynn Martinez is currently suing the County for car repair, medical bills and related costs. The law firm that represents Deputy Curley Johnson regrets that the Grand Jury went ahead with a decision to indict their client, but they are preparing for trial. Johnson, a veteran of the department for seven years, has resigned from Precinct Six. Accidents that occur as the result of a police chase or other emergency vehicle happen with far more frequency than most people realize. Sometimes it is just a simple matter of having been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Serious and even fatal accidents have been caused by incidents involving police and other emergency vehicles. Because of this, such accidents are one of the leading causes of automobile accident injuries. When a criminal is trying to escape and the police are in pursuit, there is often little thought of other innocent drivers or pedestrians who happen to be in the way.
