Patrol Horse Mourned after Accident
The Houston Police Department is mourning the death of one of its own. An HPD Mounted Patrol horse named Charlotte, a four year veteran of the department’s equestrian division, was killed in an accident while she was on duty.
The accident happened when Charlotte was struck by a truck in the downtown area of Houston. Her rider, Officer D. Herrejon was taken to an area hospital to be checked out. Though Officer Herrejon was hospitalized after the incident, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Investigators believe that the truck driver was at fault in the accident.
In a statement, a HPD spokesperson said that Charlotte was a Tennessee Walker and was just a two-year-old when she came to begin her service as a mounted police horse.
The HPD tweeted on their Twitter account that, “She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She served the citizens of Houston for 4 years. She will be missed.”
