A school busy from Humble was involved in an accident on Beltway 8 in North Houston Saturday after the bus driver lost consciousness while driving. Two buses carrying the Kingwood High School girls’ cross-country team were heading east on North Beltway 8 near Vickery Drive when one of the drivers lost consciousness behind the wheel, according to officials from the Humble school district. The bus veered off onto the shoulder of the road. It then came to a stop after hitting a shoulder wall. The driver of the bus was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Humble and is listed in good condition. One of the students on the bus was also taken to Memorial Hermann by ambulance and is also listed in good condition. A second student was transported by her parents to Kingwood Medical Center with minor injuries. There were 30 students on the bus that was involved in the accident. Traffic heading east on the Beltway was slowed for about an hour as crews removed the bus involved in the accident. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. School buses are used to transport students not only to and from the school during the week, but also during nights and weekends for sporting events or other extracurricular activities. It is the duty of school districts to insure the safety of all students travelling to school and to school-related events. According to statistics by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), approximately 17,000 children are injured in school bus related accidents. Because generally there are no seat belts in school buses, children who ride on school buses face the danger of being tossed around if the bus is involved in a crash. Injuries in accidents that have no protection from seatbelts or restraints can be very serious and can sometimes result in fatalities. All parents worry when their child is out of sight and entrusted to another person’s care. There is always the expectation that your child will be safe. However, sometimes the unexpected can happen. If your child is injured at school, or is exposed to a potentially dangerous situation either at school or to and from the campus, it can be frightening for a parent. When your child gets hurt or seriously injured in an accident, it can mean lost wages from having to take time off from work. You may even have to take family leave (FMLA) to take care of your child if their injuries are very serious, or if they need to be hospitalized. If your child has been injured in a school related accident, give us a call. Time is of the essence. Sometimes there may be limitations on the amount of time you have to file a claim, Depending on your district’s policy and community ordinances.
