SUV Driver Collides with Steel Beams on a Trailer
A 25-year-old driver has been critically injured when he slammed his SUV into protruding steel beams that had been loaded onto a flatbed tractor trailer along FM-529 early Wednesday. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 12:45 a.m. near Paddock Bend Drive. Deputies said an 18-wheeler with the trailer was attempting to make a left turn when the driver of the SUV apparently failed to see the steel beams sticking off the back. The SUV was torn apart, and the driver suffered head injuries, deputies said. The young man was sent to the hospital in critical condition. Sheriff’s office investigators said they would look into whether or not the truck was properly loaded and flagged. There are approximately 6,000 truck accidents in the State of Texas every year that result in either injury or death. Many times accidents involving 18-wheelers can be both terrifying and the cause of serious injuries. There can be many causes of accidents involving big rigs such as driver inexperience, driver distraction, and driver fatigue or improperly distributed and marked loads. Many of the accidents involving 18-wheel tractor trailers are due to the negligent operation of drivers. 18 wheeler driving and the often oversized loads that they carry can put the driving public in considerable danger on our highways and other roadways. Motorists who drive passenger cars have a clear disadvantage against large commercial trucks. It is common knowledge that 18-wheel trucks have a distinct advantage over other motorists in terms of size and power. Often a fully loaded truck can weigh as much as 80,000 pound, or roughly some 40 tons! Hazardous materials such as propane, petrol and other potential dangerous substances are often transported by these large trucks as well as the vast amounts of fuel that they must have on board to make their long distance runs. All of these factors increase potential dangers for other drivers who may be sharing the road with a big rig. Driver experience plays a crucial role in avoiding potentially hazardous situations. Even with experienced truck drivers, accidents can happen.
