Two Children Unrestrained In 100MPH Crash
A crash in southwest Houston injured a driver and two children near South Rice and South Braeswood. Click2Houston has the story.
According to the report, an officer tracking speeds with a radar gun caught a Mercedes SUV speeding down the 610 loop. The SUV was going near 100 MPH. The officer tried to catch up but could not reach the vehicle.
Not long afterward, a call came in saying that the vehicle had crashed into a tree near South Rice. The driver and a three-year-old suffered some injuries, but a 1-year-old is undergoing surgery for their wounds.
Shockingly, neither of the young children were in safety seats at the time of the crash. It’s likely that the driver will face charges in the case, and even worse ones if the infant dies from their injuries.
Seat belts cut your risk of death in an accident by half, but safety seats are even more protective. Children are too small to use a normal seat belt properly, so safety seats are used instead to restrain a child during a crash. If they aren’t restrained, the chances of death and injury are far higher. Since they are lighter, they can fly around the cab in a crash even more than an adult.
