Woman Recovering after Hammer Attack
A woman is recovering after she was attacked while waiting for a bus by a man wielding a hammer. The incident occurred near the intersection of Ocee and Richmond around 6:45 a.m. on that very dark, foggy morning. According to investigators, Ashley Anderson, an artist and student was brutally assaulted on Martin Luther King Day while waiting at a METRO bus stop. Anderson said she was standing alone and waiting for the bus when a man walked up to her drinking orange juice. Anderson said the man seemed a little nervous, but she didn’t think much of it. Anderson says the man disappeared momentarily and then began to attack her. Anderson was struck in the head three times by her assailant. The blows were severe enough for Anderson to undergo surgery to remove bits of her skull from her swollen brain. Additionally, doctors needed to put titanium mesh on her skull where the attacker had repeatedly struck. She is now currently recovering at home. According to the physicians, Anderson sustained a traumatic brain injury as the result of the attack. Currently, Anderson does not have medical insurance to pay for her bills. The reason for the attack is unclear; however, Anderson’s attacker was only able to make off with approximately $2 in change that he scraped out of Anderson’s purse. Authorities are still searching for Anderson’s attacker. Assault and battery is a horrible crime. The motivation to commit such a crime is different for every case. Clearly the intent was there to cause harm. This person, when caught, will face criminal charges. They will also most likely face potential civil damages as well. Victims of assault and battery may often times find it difficult to recover damages for their losses in civil court if an individual who committed the crime has no assets. If the person however, does have assets, it is possible to regain damage in a civil case such as medical expenses, loss of earnings, and pain and suffering.
