Heating Issue Causes Security Giant To Recall Their Devices
On Tuesday, November 10, KHOU -11 reports that the home security giant, Ring, announced its second-generation doorbells are now under recall.
According to the Ring website’s release, the company said that the devices’ internal batteries might overheat if incorrect screws are used to install them.
The Ring doorbells under recall have been sold via online merchants like Amazon, at big box stores like Sam’s Club, and at home improvement stores across the United States and Canada from June 2020 through October 2020. Each will feature a blue ring on the front of the unit and several finishes. Also included with the doorbells are a mounting bracket and a USB charging cable.
Although Ring claims that devices that are installed correctly pose no risk, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) has said that so far, they have received eight reports of consumers being burned and 23 reports of the devices catching fire. The CSPC says that so far, there have been 85 reports of incorrect installation of the devices.
Both the company and the federal agency estimate that the recall affects some 350 million devices.
The Ring recall is for Ring’s model number 5UM5E5 smart doorbell camera devices. The company encourages consumers to check serial numbers, which is the SN or DSN. The number can be found either on the product’s original packaging or the doorbell device’s back.
Consumers are being told to stop installing Ring’s video camera doorbell devices and contact customer service. Owners of the devices may also download revised installation instructions provided on the company website.
