Homeless on Sidewalk Tangled Up in Crash
A crazy scene unfolded last week that has homeless advocates up in arms. An accident in Houston tangled up four homeless people who were sleeping under an overpass on the sidewalk. The Houston Chronicle reported on the issue.
The accident is simple enough. A driver was arguing with a passenger and ran a red light. He hit another vehicle and jumped the curb onto the sidewalk. What no one expected was that there would be four people sleeping there in the way.
One of the sleepers was pinned under the vehicle. Luckily, there were passers-by who heard the commotion and helped lift the car off of the man. That man is now in serious but stable condition. The other three homeless individuals as well as several people in the vehicles were taken to hospitals for treatment and evaluation.
No charges have been filed yet by the police against the responsible driver, but this accident comes just a week after an ordinance was passed barring homeless encampments. It is not yet illegal to sleep on the sidewalk in Houston, but as you can see from this case there may be a debate about it soon.
