A three-vehicle wreck in northwest Harris County has left one woman dead and others injured. The accident happened at approximately 8:45 p.m. on 10900 Bammel North Houston Road at the intersection of North Sam Houston Parkway West service road. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators said in a statement that according to eyewitnesses to the crash, a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a Hyundai Genesis took off at a high rate of speed simultaneously when the light turned green in the southbound lanes, as if they were drag racing. Lavada Gilder, who was driving a green Mitsubishi Mirage in the cross traffic, failed to obey a red traffic light signal in the eastbound lane of the North Sam Houston Parkway service road. Sheriff’s deputies report that the front end of the pickup truck broadsided the driver’s side of Gilder’s vehicle in the intersection. Both vehicles spun, sending Gilder’s vehicle into a clockwise rotation. The Mitsubishi came to a stop facing the southeast in the middle of the northbound lanes of Bammel North Houston Road. A third vehicle, a Buick Lacrosse struck the rear driver’s side of Gilder’s vehicle while it was spinning from the impact with the pickup truck. Lavada Gilder was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Gilder’s husband, Leroy York, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition. The driver of the pickup truck, a 17-year-old male, was taken to Houston Northwest Medical Center and suffered only minor injuries. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the accident. Traffic signs and signals first began being used in the late 1800s as a means of warning drivers of hazards on the roadway and as a means of controlling traffic. Today, this type of uses of traffic signs and signals has continued and has spread worldwide. The failure to note or obey traffic signs and signals can lead to tragic accidents. Every year, thousands of people are either injured and some even are killed because a driver did not obey traffic signals. According to national statistics, intersection collisions account for nearly 700,000 injuries and 8,000 traffic fatalities each year. Disobeying traffic signals can lead to all sorts of injuries and losses. Some of the most common are injuries by broken glass, concussions dislocation of joints, nerve damage, skull fracture and head trauma, broken bones, spinal and neck injuries, and even death.
