Man Injured on a Boat

A Houston man was injured and taken to the hospital after a boating accident on Lake Conroe near the April Plaza Marina located just off of Texas 105 on Thursday. Gene Blunt, 43 of Houston, was injured after attempting to leap from a marina pier onto the deck of a pontoon boat that was unsecured.

According to Blunt’s wife, Rochelle, “He tried jumping to the front of the pontoon, but he misjudged the distance,” wife Rochelle Blunt said. “He was hit in the middle and fell into the water.”

Gene Blunt was pulled from the water by two rescue divers who happened to be nearby.

According to Sgt. Randy Sanson with the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, Blunt was suffered injuries to his abdomen and was conscious at the scene of the accident. He was taken to Memorial Hermann the Woodlands Hospital.

Leisure time should be fun time. The idea of you or a loved one being involved in a boating accident often does not even enter our minds. Safety, especially on the water is always a factor.

There can be any number of causes that can lead to a boating accident. Most of these are completely preventable. Whether you are on a private boat, a jet ski or other type of water going vessel, the unexpected can happen.

Some of the causes for boating accidents can include:

  • DWI (Driving while intoxicated)
  • An inexperienced operator or operator error
  • Vessel or equipment failure
  • Unfavorable water and/or weather conditions

Of course, the law places the responsibility for safety on the owner of a boat or vessel to take proper precautions and to insure the safety of all of the passengers aboard or anyone else who might be in the vicinity. Swimmers and other boats and vessels on the waterway are all things to consider. But even when a boat owner or passengers have taken every step toward safety, accidents can happen.
