Pedestrian Accident in North Harris County
A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run collision along a roadway in north Harris County Sunday night.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. in the 10720 block of Airline when investigators said that a male pedestrian was attempting to cross the street.
As the pedestrian was walking across the intersection the driver of a 2005 Nissan pickup truck struck him.
Deputies say that the man was not using the crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle and that died at the scene. The victim’s name has not yet been released.
Eyewitnesses to the incident said that the driver stopped his vehicle after the collision, jumped out and fled on foot. Witnesses attempted to catch the driver but failed to do so.
Deputies were informed of the identity of the person who was allegedly driving the pickup truck. They are still being sought by law enforcement.
Sadly, hit-and-run accidents involving pedestrians are already too common. According to a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the United States, an average of 13 pedestrians are killed every day in pedestrian collisions. As in this particular incident, the days that a pedestrian is most likely to be hit and killed in an accident involving a motor vehicle are on Saturday or Sunday.
Why anyone would flee the scene of an accident can come down to a number of factors. The driver may have panicked, realizing that they were driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or didn’t have insurance and didn’t want to be held financially or criminally responsible.
The law is clear, if you are in an accident, you are required to stop and stay at the scene of the accident, especially if there are injuries or fatalities involved.
