Police Chase In Houston Ends With Fatal Crash

Last Friday, on the side of a Houston street, near Southmayd Elementary School, not far from the intersection of Coral Street and Kernal Street, sat the crumpled remains of a late model Chevy Malibu. The car, once a beauty with gold-colored rims, was now a mess of wreckage, strips of metal and wires and tubing, so distorted that it no longer resembled a vehicle at all.

What caused this mess, left behind for pedestrians to shake their heads at as they walked by? A police chase through the streets of Houston, a pursuit that lasted only ten minutes or so but that ended with the death of the suspect driving the Malibu.

A few weeks back, a Chevy Malibu was reported missing. Last Friday, the owner of the vehicle had arranged to meet the person that had taken it. The owner was also on the phone with the police when the Malibu was spotted at Howard and Galveston. Police gave chase. Ten minutes later, the speeding Malibu passed through an intersection so fast that, as it hit a dip in the road, the driver lost control.

The resulting crash ended the suspect’s life, totaling the stolen vehicle.

What story would the suspect have told if he’d lived? Why steal the car and try to return it? Why flee from the police? These questions will never be answered.
