Police Find Man Involved in Crash involving Infant

Safety is of primary consideration on the road, especially for parents who are traveling with a child in the vehicle. All 50 States have strict guidelines for child safety seats and restraints. Most parents would find it unthinkable to do everything possible to insure the safety of their child and most everyone knows that these laws are designed to protect children in the case of an accident.

One parent who failed to follow these guidelines has now found himself under arrest. James William Hammons Jr., 29, has been arrested in connection with a rollover accident last month that left his infant son injured. The father abandoned his child at the scene of the crash.

Authorities say that Hammons has been charged with driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age, felony failure to stop and render aid and child abandonment.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on July 20 on East Williams Road and South Williams Road when Hammons rolled the Ford Fusion he was driving. The infant was ejected from the vehicle that had come to rest on its roof some 20 feet away.

PHI Air Medical transported the infant to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The infant has been released and is currently in foster care.

Hammons is currently being held in the Polk County Jail.
