Teen Smuggler Sentenced to Prison after Deadly Crash
South Texas has become the epicenter of a new kind of highway danger—fleeing immigrants and their smugglers. Immigrants from Mexico as well as Central America pay thousands of dollars to be guided and smuggled up across the border and to places like Houston. Because smugglers must evade the authorities, their trek can become a high-speed chase at any time, putting the lives of the smugglers, the immigrants, the police involved, and anyone else on the road, in serious danger.
A teenage smuggler crashed his Chevrolet Blazer into a tree while trying to flee from the police, as he carried several immigrants in his car. As a result, five passengers were killed and nine more were injured. Now, that smuggler, Manuel Rendon-Lucas, has been sentenced to 16 and a half years in prison and three years of supervised release, in addition to a hefty fine.
Situations like this remind us how dangerous the roads south of Houston can be, since so many illegal traffickers are using our roads to transport immigrants.
