Alcohol a Factor in Freeway Crash
Law enforcement officers are searching for two suspects who were involved in an accident that occurred on the Eastex Freeway early Sunday morning that left one dead and two others seriously injured. The accident happened at approximately 6:00 a.m. when a Cadillac DeVille cut in front of a semi-tractor trailer that was heading north on the Eastex Freeway near the Highway 288 interchange. The semi clipped the back end of the car causing it to spin out of control and a barricade wall along the shoulder. According to the Houston Police department, there were a total of five occupants in the car that was struck. One of the passengers sitting in the back seat died at the scene of the accident, while two others were transported to Ben Taub Hospital and were listed in serious condition.
The driver of the Cadillac along with one of the other passengers fled the scene of the accident before police arrived. Investigators say that signs inside the vehicle indicate that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. The driver of the big rig was not injured in the accident and was not found to be at fault. Never be tempted to drive under the influence of alcohol. The state of Texas has a low tolerance for those who would drink and drive and driving under the influence of alcohol or DUI, is considered a serious crime. One of the leading causes of fatal car accidents each year is because of drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
The legal blood alcohol level that a driver must have to operate a vehicle in the state of Texas is below 0.08%. For holders of commercial driver’s licenses such as those required to operate 18-wheel rigs, buses or other heavy trucks, the legal limit for them has been set at 0.04% in all 50 States. Accidents involving a driver who is DUI or DWI are often more serious in nature. A driver, who is convicted of DUI, even in a first time offense, can be facing very heavy fines and long jail sentences, along with many hours of community service. That is just the beginning. A driver convicted of DUI will more than likely face paying damages and restitution to the victims or their families. They may also face loss of license, their insurance coverage, or very likely both.
