Head-on Crash Kills Driver, Alcohol Possibly Involved

indexWhen someone chooses to drink and drive, it can have devastating and even tragic results. That is what happened in the case of a woman who was killed in a head-on collision with another vehicle being driven by a man under the influence of alcohol.

According to Richard Sanders, an investigator with the sheriff’s office, Emily Agirre was riding as a passenger in a red Hyundai with Jose Alvarez. The couple had been traveling westbound on Atascocita Road. At approximately 11:20 p.m. in the 400 block, the driver of a black Ford F-150 pickup truck was travelling eastbound when he suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic. The truck struck the Hyundai head-on.

Emergency crews transported both Agirre and Alavarez to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. Agirre later died as the result of injuries she sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Ford F-150 has been identified as Rodrigo Cornejo.

Cornejo was transported to Ben Taub hospital. Officials determined that Cornejo had been driving impaired following a blood test. He was arrested and has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection to Agirre’s death.

The charge of intoxication manslaughter, this is an extremely serious crime and it is a second-degree felony punishable by loss of license, loss of insurance, along with a fine of up to $10,000 and caries a prison sentence of between 2 and 20 years. It is pretty much a given that drinking and driving carries a very high price.
