Cow Crash Claims Life of Police Officer

download (34)A cow that got loose and was wandering on Highway 99 near Katy was the cause of an accident that took the life of an off-duty Houston Police Department officer early Sunday morning.

The Houston Police Department has identified the officer as Taurean Branford, 32, of the motor vehicle crimes division. Branford was an eight year veteran of the HPD.

Branford was driving his Yamaha motorcycle southbound on Highway 99 at approximately 1:20 a.m. when he struck a cow wandering in the moving lane of traffic near FM 529 with his vehicle. According to Harris County Deputy Paul Begley, after striking the cow, Branford was thrown off of his motorcycle. Branford died at the scene of the accident.

The cow, even though it had been struck by Branford’s motorcycle, remained standing until another vehicle struck and killed the animal. The collision of the second vehicle with the cow caused the driver to hit the guard wires in the center of the highway. The driver, however, was uninjured in the collision.
