Straight streets and good roads attract street racers. It can happen anywhere – from Chicago to Miami, Boston to Los Angeles. It can even happen in the beautiful city of Houston. But it’s illegal for good reason. In some cases, the results are much more tragic and impactful than having a police officer arrest the speeding drivers.
In April of last year, a youngster decided to go speeding down the street with another driver. Perhaps inspired by a street racing movie or wishing to prove his ‘worth,’ the drivers pushed forward, blowing through red lights. Unfortunately, they went through one too many.
An older couple, the man a pastor at the local church and owner of a remodeling company, the lady a caregiver for special needs children, were hit on one of these speed-trap excursions. They were killed, leaving a huge hole in the family.
“I don’t hate you. I actually pray for you and your family. Because that’s what my parents, and God, would want,” said one of the children of the two killed. Simply a sad situation all around.
One driver fled the scene and has yet to be identified. The other has been charged with 2 counts of felony racing and 2 counts of failure to render aid. He has also been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his part in the incident. After killing the couple, the driver’s statement has consistently been, “I would like to ask that you forgive me. Since that day God has transformed me.”
