Head-on Crash on Texas 225
One person is dead and another injured after a wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle on Texas 225 in southeast Houston early Sunday morning.
According to Sgt. James Roque of the Houston Police Department, the fiery crash happened at 2:30 a.m. on the eastbound La Porte Freeway near Allen Genoa.
A man was driving his pickup truck westbound on the Texas 225 in the eastbound lanes when he struck another vehicle head on. Both the truck and car burst into flame. The car flipped over a guardrail and the driver was thrown from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Other motorists who were on the highway at the time of the accident stopped to pull the driver of the pickup truck from is burning vehicle.
The driver of the pickup truck was rushed by ambulance to Ben Taub General Hospital for unspecified injuries. His condition has not been released. Authorities have indicated that he sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Roque indicated it is unclear where the wrong-way driver may have gotten onto the freeway or how long he was driving the wrong way before the fatal crash. Police were alerted to the situation when motorists spotted the pickup driver and dialed 911.
Police are still currently investigating the crash. It is not known whether charges are pending against the driver of the pickup truck.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), every year thousands of motorists lose their lives in wrong way crashes. Many thousands more are left with serious injuries. A wrong-way collision can be caused because of a poorly lit highway and the signs were not visible, or by a driver that becomes confused or is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Whatever the cause, a wrong way crash can leave families devastated.
